Your masters, the licence and release costs

Understand ownership, zero upfront base fees, recording-income shares and approved expenses before signing.

Ownership is different from a licence

Under the Artanrecords partnership model, the artist retains master ownership. The label receives only the rights defined in a separate agreement to operate the accepted release. Identify the recordings, permitted uses, territory, term and departure process. Songwriting and publishing rights are separate from the sound recording.

Zero upfront is not a promise of zero costs

Accepted standard releases have no upfront base distribution fee. Finished masters, artwork, metadata, credits and rights clearances are artist inputs. Additional production, domains, advertising and external PR require a separate scope and cost decision. A submission does not create a purchase or an agreement.

Define the money before calculating a share

The agreement must define eligible master-side Net Receipts, permitted deductions, currency conversion, artist and label shares, reporting periods, payment conditions and correction procedures. Do not infer a percentage from a tier name or treat a streaming count as earnings. Public working examples are not a substitute for the signed financial terms.

Approve expenses first

Identify whether an expense is label-funded and non-recoupable, artist-paid or approved and recoupable. Record the supplier, purpose, cap, approval and evidence of the actual cost. A proposed campaign does not authorize spending, and recoupment must not be added after the fact without agreement.

Plan the end at the beginning

Agree notice, licence expiry, final statements, outstanding amounts, identifiers, asset handover and migration responsibilities. Website and domain ownership, renewal and maintenance need separate clarity. Do not delete a live release before an agreed migration plan; playlist continuity is not guaranteed.
